SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS OF GREEK DESCENT
FOR THE 2008-2009 ACADEMIC YEAR
All applicants must be
of Greek descent, U.S. citizens, and lawful permanent residents
of Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh, Montgomery,
or Philadelphia Counties in Pennsylvania;
Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester
or Salem Counties in New Jersey.
Undergraduate students who are declared majors in
Greek Studies may
also apply, regardless of heritage.
UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
These Scholarships will be awarded to students with
outstanding academic qualifications and financial need. Students
must be enrolled full time in a degree program at an accredited
four-year college or university. High school seniors accepted
for enrollment in such a degree program may also apply.
Dorizas Memorial Scholarship, honoring the
late Dr. Michael Dorizas, a widely respected Philadelphia educator
and athlete. $3,000
Founders Scholarship, honoring the deceased
founders of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia. $3,000
Christopher Demetris Scholarship, funded
by Jack and Olga Demetris in memory of their infant son. Offered
to a qualified student who is Greek Orthodox. $1,200
Andrew G. Chressanthis Memorial Scholarship,
given by his family to honor this former member of the Hellenic
University Club.. $2,000
Dimitri J. Ververelli Memorial Scholarship
for Architecture and/or Engineering, established by Anastasia
Ververelli to honor the memory of her husband, Dimitri J. Ververelli,
past president of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia,
who passed away in 2004. Offered to a qualified student who is
pursuing a degree in the fields of Architecture and/or Engineering.
$2,000
George C. Liacouras Memorial Scholarship,
offered to a student pursuing an undergraduate degree at the Wharton
School of the University of Pennsylvania. Established by Mrs.
Effie Liacouras, this scholarship honors her husband, George C.
Liacouras and will be awarded for the first time this year. $5,000
Peter George Pitsakis Memorial Scholarship,
established in accordance with the request of and in memory of
Peter G. Pitsakis, a past president of the Hellenic University
Club, who passed away in 2008. $2,500

The Paideia Scholarship, a merit scholarship
awarded to the child of a Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia
member. Academic excellence is the primary consideration; no financial
information is required. The parent(s) must be current members
in good standing for at least three years. $3,000
The Goldie S. Vastardis Memorial Scholarship,
funded by a grant from Louis Vastardis, in memory of his wife,
this merit scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior
whose parents or grandparents are stewards of St. Luke's Greek
Orthodox Church, Broomall, Pa. Academic excellence is the primary
consideration; no financial information is required. $1,000
Cyprus Society Scholarship, funded
by the Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia,
is offered to a student whose family are members in good standing
of the Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia for the past 3 years.
Academic excellence is the primary consideration; no financial
information is required. $2,000
Anthony Chokas Memorial Scholarship $2,000
Chios Society of Philadelphia ‘Koraes” Scholarship
$2,000
These 2 scholarships are offered by the Chios Society of Philadelphia
‘Koraes.’ The first award honors the late president
of the Chios Society, Mr. Anthony Chokas. The second award is
in memory of and honors past and present leaders and members of
the Chios Society. Applicants must be of Chian descent. Academic
excellence is the primary consideration; no financial information
is required.

GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
The Dr. Nicholas Padis Memorial Graduate Scholarship
in the amount of $5,000 will be awarded to a qualifying
senior undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a graduate degree
full time at an accredited university or professional school.
Academic excellence is the primary consideration for this scholarship.
Established in 1986, this annual award honors Dr. Nicholas Padis,
Philadelphia physician, first president and founding member of
the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia.
The Dr. Peter A. Theodos Memorial Graduate Scholarship
in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded to a senior undergraduate
or graduate student with financial need pursuing studies leading
to a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) Degree. Established in 1988, this
annual award honors Dr. Peter A. Theodos, Philadelphia physician,
past president and founding member of the Hellenic University
Club of Philadelphia. This scholarship is funded by the Theodos
family and includes an additional grant provided this year by
Peter J. Liacouras, in honor of Minerva Lagakos Theodos.
The Nicholas S. Hetos, DDS, Memorial Graduate
Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 will be awarded
to a senior undergraduate or graduate student with financial need
pursuing studies leading to a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.)
or Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) Degree. This award honors
Dr. Nicholas S. Hetos, Philadelphia dentist, past president and
founding member of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia.
This scholarship is funded by the Hetos family.
